Short video platform TikTok has been fined EUR 345 million (~USD 368 million) by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) for breaches of data privacy laws regarding the processing of children's personal data in the EU.
The fine follows a ruling by the central EU privacy body in August to resolve disagreements between the DPC and privacy agencies of other EU countries on the handling of an investigation into TikTok’s treatment of private data.
TikTok has issued a statement disagreeing with the decision, questioning the level of the fine imposed and claiming that it had made necessary changes to its privacy mechanisms prior to the DPC inquiry.
The DPC is conducting an additional investigation into TikTok’s compliance with the EU general data protection regulation (GDPR) regarding whether the company transferred personal data from the EU to China, where its owner, ByteDance, is based.
