Meta has introduced legs for virtual avatars in its Horizon Worlds universe. This enhancement, previously described by Mark Zuckerberg as probably the most requested feature, aims to provide users with a more immersive experience in the virtual realm.
The addition of legs to avatars in Horizon Worlds follows their initial appearance in Quest Home as the platform expands its offerings beyond virtual reality to mobile and web experiences. The inclusion of legs for avatars was a technical challenge for Meta, as a glitchy representation could disrupt the user's sense of immersion in virtual reality. To address issues such as occlusion, Meta developed an AI model to predict the entire body's position.
Additionally, Meta has been progressively introducing a variety of body shapes and enhanced textures for its avatars. As of April, over one billion avatars have been created across Meta's platforms. However, third-party applications currently cannot replicate these legged avatars.
