BMW receives approval to offer Level 3 automated driving functions in Germany

Regulation/policy

  • German multinational automaker BMW has received approval from the German Motor Transport Authority to introduce SAE Level 3 automated driving features in Germany, where the driver is not required to maintain full vigilance (a hands-free and eyes-off driving system) but must be able to take control if necessary.

  • The company has not yet disclosed the pricing of the system but revealed that it intends to introduce the system in the 7 Series in late 2023.

  • BMW’s automated driving software can operate autonomously on highways at speeds up to 37.3 mph in traffic jams or heavy traffic.

  • Analyst QuickTake: With today’s approval, BMW will follow Mercedes-Benz, which first deployed its Level 3 automated driving software, “Drive Pilot,” in Germany in August 2022.
