German multinational automaker BMW has received approval from the German Motor Transport Authority to introduce SAE Level 3 automated driving features in Germany, where the driver is not required to maintain full vigilance (a hands-free and eyes-off driving system) but must be able to take control if necessary.
The company has not yet disclosed the pricing of the system but revealed that it intends to introduce the system in the 7 Series in late 2023.
BMW’s automated driving software can operate autonomously on highways at speeds up to 37.3 mph in traffic jams or heavy traffic.
Analyst QuickTake: With today’s approval, BMW will follow Mercedes-Benz, which first deployed its Level 3 automated driving software, “Drive Pilot,” in Germany in August 2022.
