Smartville receives USD 10 million from DOE to expand energy storage systems

Funding

  • Smartville Inc., a manufacturer of energy storage systems by repurposing domestic EV batteries, has been awarded a grant of USD 10 million by the US Department of Energy's Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations as a part of a USD 325 million investment into long-duration energy storage technologies.

  • The funding will be utilized to deploy Smartville 360 energy storage systems made from repurposed EV battery packs. Smartville expects to install batteries exceeding 7 MW hours of capacity in total.

  • The storage systems would be built in six locations across four states, including San Diego, Atlanta, New Orleans, Orangeburg, Denmark, and South Carolina. The company intends to target senior centers, low-income housing complexes, and EV-charging facilities as prospective locations.

  • Founded in 2019, Smartville Inc. produces modular and standardized energy storage systems by repurposing domestic EV batteries to develop its Smartville 360 energy storage systems. Smartville expects to launch its first commercial product by Q1 2024 and start manufacturing at an industrial scale by 2025.
