Redwood Materials, a Nevada-based e-waste recycling startup, has partnered with Panasonic, a Tokyo-based diversified electronics company, to recycle critical minerals from used EV batteries. Through the partnership, Panasonic aims to obtain battery materials and reduce CO2 emissions from the resource extraction stage to the production stage.
The partnership focuses on extracting high-purity nickel from end-of-life batteries and supplying it to Panasonic Energy, a subsidiary of Panasonic Holdings, by 2028. Additionally, the companies intend to explore the recycling of cobalt and lithium, other critical components of EV batteries.
The project will be carried out at a Redwood Materials factory in Nevada, where they already recycle defective batteries and scraps from the Panasonic Energy plant in the state.
This partnership is preceded by the agreement of Panasonic Energy with Redwood Materials to purchase cathode-active materials and copper foil for EV lithium-ion batteries in November 2022 .
