American Express has announced plans to introduce facial and fingerprint recognition as authentication methods for online checkouts.
These biometric authentication features will be integrated into the company's SafeKey 3-D Secure tool and have been developed using web authentication technologies from organizations like the Fido Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium.
A limited number of US customers will have initial access to this pilot program, contingent on a security validation process during checkout. The broader rollout to all US cardholders is scheduled for early 2024.
