Svante, a Canadian carbon capture startup, has signed a commercial supply agreement with BASF, a chemical and material science company, to manufacture Svante's proprietary sorbent material, CALF-20, for its carbon capture process.
Svante claims that its sorbent is made from metal-organic framework (MOF) nanomaterial and can capture 95% of CO2 emitted from industrial sources using solid adsorption and low-pressure steam.
The partnership with BASF will enable Svante to scale up sorbent manufacturing to multi-million-ton capacity and implement large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities by 2030.
Since 2021, Svante and BASF have collaborated to scale up CALF-20 to demonstrate its resistance to oxidation and water vapor, enabling carbon capture at a low cost.
