Geographic expansion
Partnerships

  • General Motors (GM), its autonomous car subsidiary, Cruise, and Japanese automaker Honda have announced plans to establish a joint venture (JV) to introduce a robotaxi service in Tokyo, Japan, in early 2026.

  • The service is scheduled to begin in central Tokyo, initially deploying dozens of purpose-built “Cruise Origin” vehicles, with an eventual expansion to 500 units.

  • The companies intend to expand the service area beyond central Tokyo eventually.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Despite recent incidents and oppositio n in San Francisco, Cruise has rapidly expanded its operations, obtaining permits for 24/7 service in San Francisco and launching robotaxi services in multiple other US cities and Dubai. Today’s news would mark Cruise's entry into Asia.
