California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Senate Bill 362 or the California Delete Act into the law.
The new law expands upon data privacy protections afforded to consumers by the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), allowing residents to delete their personal information from all data brokers in the state with a single request. Previously, consumers were required to send individual deletion requests to each data broker.
The Delete Act charges the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) with developing a mechanism to enable the one-call deletion; it requires all brokers to register with the CPPA.
The law goes into effect on January 1, 2026, and data brokers are required to process verified deletion requests within 45 days from August 1, 2026.
