The UK government has announced reforms to household and business bin collections to boost recycling rates. The new approach ensures that people can recycle the same materials at home, work, and school. By 2026, the government expects to implement weekly food waste collections.
Furthermore, the changes intend to reduce the complexity of recycling when local authorities collect the required recyclable waste streams: glass, metal, plastic, paper and card, food waste, and garden waste.
The new system uses digital waste tracking, which will record information from the point it is produced to the point it is disposed of to investigate unauthorized waste operators. The government will increase background checks for firms that move or trade waste to ensure waste is diverted to the appropriate place.
