Stellantis, a Netherland-based multinational automotive manufacturer, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to form a joint venture (JV) with Orano, a French nuclear fuels firm. The JV expects to recycle used EV batteries and scrap materials from Stellantis' giga factories in Europe and North America using Orano's technology.
The recycling process will produce a “black mass” that will then be refined in Orano's new plant in Dunkirk, France, to reuse in battery production. The JV will give Stellantis access to materials such as cobalt, nickel, and lithium, which are required for electrification and energy transition.
The partners will start recycling operations in 2026.
