UK Treasury to launch AI chatbot for Britons to pay taxes and access pensions in partnership with OpenAI

Industry news

  • The UK Treasury plans to launch an AI chatbot called "Gov.UK Chat" to assist the public with tax payments and access to pensions in what would be the largest implementation of AI technology by the Government.

  • The chatbot is being developed by OpenAI and will be trained on the gov.uk website. It aims to provide information on government services such as student loans, benefits, and legal inquiries, potentially reducing pressure on call centers.

  • The chatbot will not use personal data and users will be discouraged from providing such information. However, if personal details are entered, the data will be sent to OpenAI for processing in the US.
