SoftBank launches GenAI computing platform to develop Japanese LLM

Product updates

  • SoftBank Corp., a Japanese multinational conglomerate, has unveiled a GenAI computing platform. The platform is intended to help in the development of large language models (LLMs) geared toward the Japanese language.

  • The main aim of the platform is to build homegrown LLMs with 350 billion parameters by 2024.

  • The platform has over 2,000 NVIDIA Tensor Core GPUs in an NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD AI supercomputer and includes NVIDIA Networking and NVIDIA AI Enterprise software. It was brought to operational readiness with the help of ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corporation.

  • Analyst QuickTake: According to the company, AI resources for Japanese datasets have been comparably scarce. Therefore, this new platform is expected to significantly enhance the AI capabilities for Japanese language and business needs. SoftBank, under its subsidiary SB Intuitions, also plans to share access to the computing platform with universities, research institutions, and businesses to foster and accelerate AI adoption in the country.
