Mira Murati appointed interim CEO of OpenAI after Sam Altman's departure

Management news

  • OpenAI has announced that Sam Altman, the current CEO, will be leaving the company and also withdrawing from the board of directors. As he steps down, Mira Murati, OpenAI's current chief technology officer, will fill in as interim CEO.

  • After a review process, the board has determined that Sam Altman's lack of transparency in communication impaired the board's decision-making, leading to his exit.

  • Murati, his replacement, will lead the company's research, product, and safety functions in her new role.

  • Greg Brockman, the former chairman and co-founder, also resigned due to Altman's departure.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Altman, previously a prominent figure for OpenAI, led the company through significant milestones. Altman's recent ventures outside OpenAI include rumored discussions with Jony Ive about creating an "iPhone of artificial intelligence" which was later dismissed and his involvement as a major shareholder in Humane, a company focused on AI wearable technology. Elon Musk, a co-founder who previously co-chaired OpenAI with Altman, also stepped down in 2018 to prevent a conflict of interest with Tesla, subsequently establishing xAI. Meanwhile, Microsoft, a major investor, has reaffirmed its commitment to OpenAI despite the leadership change.
