Climeworks, a Swiss direct air capture (DAC) startup, and Deep Sky, a Canadian carbon removal project developer, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop large-scale carbon capture and storage projects in Canada.
The partnership aims to utilize Climeworks’ DAC technology to remove and permanently sequester ~one million tons of CO2, with plans to operate its first DAC facility before 2030. The partners plan to utilize Canada's renewable energy resources for the projects.
As the project development partner, Deep Sky will explore sites and energy sources to deploy the DAC projects. In addition, the company plans to liaise with public and private stakeholders to build the infrastructure for the projects.
Through the partnership, Climeworks intends to expand its capacity at megaton scale by 2030 and gigaton scale by 2050.
