SpaceX, a space travel and launch company, has acquired Pioneer Aerospace, a provider of high-speed drogue parachutes, for USD 2.2 million as part of Pioneer's bankruptcy proceedings.
Pioneer Aerospace, founded in 1938, specializes in producing aerodynamic deceleration systems (parachutes). SpaceX selected the company to develop drogue parachutes which are integral to the safe and successful operation of SpaceX's Dragon capsules.
Through this acquisition, SpaceX will vertically integrate the production of drogue parachutes, allowing the company to ensure quality control of this crucial component.
