Sarvam, a GenAI startup based in India, has raised USD 41 million in Series A funding led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Khosla Ventures and Peak XV Partners.
It intends to utilize the funds for developing fundamental AI systems that are open source, along with creating tools that enable the development of applications given the limited computing resources accessible to developers in India.
Sarvam's initial open-source model is set to operate across the top 10 Indian languages and will be launched within the upcoming weeks. It will be open for trial use by developers, startups, businesses, as well as government-owned organizations.
Sarvam AI is in the process of constructing language models designed for specific applications in Indian languages. The goal is to ensure that these apps are accessible at price levels that cater to the affordability of the country's 1.4 billion population.
