Tesla has announced a recall of nearly all two million of its cars in the US, following a two-year investigation by US safety regulators into roughly 1,000 crashes in which Tesla's autopilot feature was engaged.
Following the recall, Tesla plans to improve its autopilot features with an over-the-air software update with features that restrict the use of autopilot in situations where the drivers are inattentive. The updated Teslas will carry out frequent checks on the attention level of the driver when its “Autosteer” feature is turned on and will disengage the feature if the driver is inattentive. It will also issue warnings when the driver is inattentive and will limit the use of the Autosteer if a driver repeatedly fails to demonstrate the capability to resume control of the car.
