Neurophos, a spinout from Duke University and Metacept Inc., has secured USD 7.2 million in a seed funding round led by Gates Frontier, with the participation of MetaVC, Mana Ventures, and others.
The funding will be used to advance Neurophos' breakthrough in metamaterials and optical AI inference chips. The company plans to produce a proprietary metasurface serving as a tensor core processor with advanced optical properties.
Neurophos achieves advancements in optical computing through metamaterials. By leveraging metamaterials in a standard CMOS process, Neurophos significantly shrinks optical processors, claiming an 8,000x reduction in size for unprecedented improvements over current GPUs.
The technology aims to address the rising energy consumption of global data centers due to the exponential growth of AI inference workloads.
