Walmart Health, a subsidiary of retail giant Walmart, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire multi-specialty telehealth company MeMD. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to be finalized in the upcoming months. The financial terms of the transaction are not yet disclosed.
Following the acquisition, Walmart Health will provide virtual care, including primary, urgent, and behavioral care via MeMD in addition to its existing in-person care services. The company plans to broaden its coverage and reach a wider customer base.
MeMD offers individual and corporate clients on-demand virtual care for common medical issues as well as telebehavioral health services such as talk therapy, psychiatry, and teen therapy.
Walmart entered the healthcare space by launching its first health center in Dallas in September 2019. As of May 2021, the company’s geographical footprint had expanded to Georgia, Texas, Arkansas, and Illinois. Walmart Health clinics offer primary care, audiology, optometry, dental care, counseling, and diagnostic services.
