German automaker Mercedes-Benz has obtained approval to test its SAE Level 3 highway autonomous driving system dubbed Drive Pilot in Beijing, China.
The company’s Chinese R&D team has worked toward adapting the Level 3 autonomous driving system to China's infrastructure and traffic conditions, focusing on system performance enhancements through testing and validation in closed environments since 2021.
The system is equipped with Level 3 automated features, where the driver is not required to maintain full vigilance (a hands-free and eyes-off driving system) but must be able to take control if necessary.
Analyst QuickTake: Mercedes-Benz first deployed Drive Pilot in Germany in August 2022 and received approval for the same from Nevada and California regulators earlier this year as it entered the US market.
