Qualcomm launches Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip for mixed reality devices

Product updates

  • Qualcomm launched its latest chip platform, Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. The platform is designed to enhance mixed reality experiences for an upcoming generation of devices.

  • The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform promises an improved spatial computing experience backed by a 4.3K resolution per eye at 90 frames per second, alongside a 12 ms video passthrough. It also supports 12 or more concurrent cameras for user and environment tracking. Other key features include an augmented GPU frequency by 15%, a CPU frequency increase by 20%, and advanced on-device AI capabilities.

  • Samsung and Google are set to launch XR devices which will leverage the chip, with Qualcomm also showcasing a mixed reality and VR reference design developed by Goertek, featuring eye-tracking tech from Tobii. The design supports 3K per eye (Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2) and 4K per eye (Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2) configurations.

  • Analyst QuickTake: The news follows Qualcomm’s launch of the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 (which powers Meta’s Quest 3 headset) and the AR1 Gen 1 in October 2023 , tailored for smart glasses. Additionally, the chip’s 12 ms video passthrough rivals that of Apple’s R1 chip, which will be used in its upcoming Vision Pro headset.
