Astrobotic's lunar lander faces propulsion issues post-launch

Product updates

  • United Launch Alliance (ULA), a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, successfully launched its Vulcan Centaur rocket carrying Astrobotic Technology's Peregrine lunar lander from Cape Canaveral Space Force Center at 2:18 a.m. EST on January 8.

  • A few hours post-launch, the lunar lander encountered a complication halting the possibility of a moon landing. According to the company, a propulsion system failure was the root cause, creating problems in solar array orientation and battery charging.

  • Despite the complications, Astrobotic Technology is attempting to use Peregrine's available power to conduct feasible payload and spacecraft operations. Moreover, the company has plans to launch a second moon lander, Griffin, later this year with the help of SpaceX.
