BASF, a leading chemical and material science company, has partnered with Stena Recycling, a European recycling service provider, to purchase black mass and establish a European value chain for battery recycling.
Under the partnership, Stena Recycling will collect and process end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, including dismantling, discharging, and producing black mass. BASF will then extract valuable metals from the black mass, which will be used to produce new cathode-active materials for lithium-ion batteries in BASF's upcoming commercial-scale battery recycling metal refinery in Europe.
