Google cuts hundreds of jobs in AR hardware department restructure

Management news

  • Google is laying off hundreds of individuals working in its AR hardware sector. This action is due to changes in the 1P AR hardware team and the closure of an AR glasses project, codenamed Iris, in early 2023. However, Google states that it remains dedicated to other AR-related endeavors and partnerships.

  • The layoffs primarily affect the 1P AR Hardware team, with a substantial percentage of its members impacted. Notable departures include former XR head Clay Bavor, AR operating system architect Marc Lucovsky, and vice president of Hardware Engineering Paul Greco.

  • Despite these layoffs, Google continues its collaboration with Samsung on a mixed reality headset, hinting at a persisting commitment to the AR technology sector. This project is slated for a potential release by the end of 2024. It also suggests that a portion of the workforce may be retained to support ongoing and future initiatives.
