Pony.ai and GAC Toyota secure approval for Sienna robotaxi commercial operation in Guangzhou, China

Regulation/policy

  • Pony.ai, a China- and US-based self-driving vehicle technology company, has received approval to operate its robotaxi service commercially in Guangzhou's Nansha district in China. The robotaxis are based on GAC Toyota Sienna vehicles and are equipped with Pony.ai's sixth-generation autonomous driving software.

  • The service, accessible through Pony.ai's PonyPilot+ and GAC Group’s OnTime ride-share platforms, is now available for public use. The taxi operates across the entire 310-square-mile region of Nansha district, including during rush hours.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Pony.ai first launched the service in Guangzhou in 2018 and obtained a license to operate 100 robotaxis in Nansha in April 2022 , which was launched with a safety driver on board. The company started offering driverless services in the area in April 2023, and today marks another milestone for the company as it commercializes the tech.
