Meta to develop open-source AGI; begins training Llama3 LLM

  • Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company is working on developing open-source artificial general intelligence (AGI). The initiative involves integrating two of its AI research teams, FAIR and GenAI, to create full general intelligence and make it open-source.

  • Zuckerberg highlighted the need for advancements in various AI areas, including reasoning, planning, coding, and memory. Meta claims that the key benefits of its open-source AGI initiative include the potential for widespread availability, responsible open-sourcing, and the development of advanced AI assistants for creators and businesses. 

  • He also revealed that Meta is currently training Llama3, the next generation of its large language model (LLMs), and is building a large AI computing infrastructure that would include 350,000 NVIDIA H100 chips by the end of 2025.
