WHO introduces guidance on AI ethics and governance

Industry news

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has introduced guidance for ethics and governance of large multi-modal models (LMMs).

  • The guidelines consist of over 40 recommendations for governments, tech companies, and healthcare providers to ensure the proper usage of LMMs to protect public health, and for developers to account for risks such as producing false, inaccurate, biased, or incomplete statements. Application areas, such as diagnosis and clinical care, patient-guided use, administrative tasks, medical and nursing education, scientific research, and drug development, were also included.

  • Additionally, the WHO provides recommendations to governments to ensure these technologies meet ethical and human rights standards before their implementation.
