Aptiv, an automotive tech company and a key investor in autonomous vehicle company Motional, has announced it will reduce its stake in the company and stop further funding the joint venture (JV). Aptiv's decision is due to the high costs and long timeline associated with launching a robotaxi service, which it finds challenging for market adoption.
Motional, resulting from a USD 4 billion collaboration between Hyundai and Aptiv, is working on commercializing autonomous taxis by 2024. Despite Aptiv's pullback, Motional remains optimistic about its future, focusing on scaling its driverless services and developing a new robotaxi with Kia.
The origins of Motional trace back to nuTonomy, an autonomous vehicle startup founded in 2013 and later acquired by Delphi, which split into Delphi Technologies and Aptiv. Aptiv, focusing on autonomous technology, partnered with Hyundai to form Motional.
