California regulators investigate Waymo following crash with cyclist

Regulation/policy

  • Waymo, the self-driving tech development unit of Google's parent company, Alphabet, is under investigation by the California Department of Motor Vehicles following a collision involving a Waymo driverless car and a cyclist in San Francisco, California, which resulted in non-fatal injuries to the cyclist.

  • The incident occurred when the Waymo vehicle, with one occupant inside, moved into an intersection and hit a cyclist who was obscured by a large truck and emerged suddenly into the car's path, leading to a collision despite the car's attempt to brake.

  • Analyst QuickTake: The accident adds to growing safety concerns surrounding autonomous taxi services, highlighted by a previous incident where Cruise, General Motors’ autonomous taxi company, had to recall its fleet after a robotaxi incident involving a pedestrian; it is now under investigation by multiple federal agencies, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Department of Justice, and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
