Disney invests USD 1.5 billion in Epic Games to build new gaming metaverse

Funding

  • Disney announced a USD 1.5 billion investment in Epic Games, the creators of the popular video game, Fortnite.

  • Following the acquisition, Disney aims to create an immersive entertainment universe in which consumers can interact with characters and stories from various Disney franchises such as Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar. This includes various engagement opportunities like playing, watching, and shopping. In addition, Disney plans to develop new games in collaboration with Epic Games.

  • Apart from Fortnite, Epic Games has a diverse portfolio of games and is known for its game development toolkit called Unreal Engine.

  • Analyst QuickTake : This development is significant, especially in light of Disney's March 2023 decision to scale back its involvement in the Metaverse by shutting down its dedicated division as a component of its broader layoff strategy. The recent investment underscores Disney's renewed dedication to integrating its properties into the Metaverse, aiming to engage a new generation of audiences.
