GM doubles coverage of Super Cruise system in US and Canada

Geographic expansion

  • General Motors (GM) is expanding the coverage of its "Super Cruise" semi-automated driving system by adding approximately 350,000 miles of roadways in the US and Canada, doubling the areas where the system can be used.

  • This expansion extends to divided highways and two-lane roads linking cities and towns. The system can also handle roads with intersections and crossing traffic but requires the driver’s readiness to take control.

  • The company intends to expand through an online software update through 2025, without additional customer charges.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Driver assistance tech is hitting its stride, but is also facing challenges about safety and rules. Companies like GM and Tesla keep updating their driver assistance systems but are also challenged by safety incidents and regulatory scrutiny.
