24M Technologies (24M), a semi-solid lithium-ion battery developer, has launched a new electrolyte technology known as "Eternalyte" for lithium-metal batteries. The liquid electrolyte formula will provide notable improvements to the cycle life and rate capability of lithium-metal batteries across EV, energy storage, and other applications.
This new technology builds on several technology innovations from 24M, including 24M ETOP, its electrode-to-pack battery technology, and 24M Impervio, a battery pack separator. These, when combined together with Externalyte, provide a battery technology suite that is more advanced than 24M’s SemiSolid and Unit Cell manufacturing platforms and can provide a safe 1,000-mile-per-charge battery pack for EVs.
As per the test results of Eternalyte, for a lithium-metal cell cycling at 1C discharge/1C charge, 24M Eternalyte enables the cell to retain 83% capacity over 500+ cycles, 500,000+ miles of total range, and 1,000 miles per charge.
Analyst QuickTake: This launch follows 24M introducing its 24M Impervio, a new battery separator, in January 2024 . The innovation intends to improve battery safety for EVs, energy storage systems, and consumer applications by preventing fires due to metallic dendrites. Prior to this in October 2023 , the company launched its 24M Electrode To Pack (ETOP) system. This directly packages electrodes into the battery pack, eliminating the need for individual cells and modules.
