Eastman partners with Patagonia to tackle textile waste through molecular recycling technology

Partnerships

  • Eastman, a specialty chemical and recycling company, has teamed up with outdoor apparel manufacturer Patagonia to tackle the issue of textile waste.

  • The companies will aim to recycle 8,000 lbs of clothing waste using Eastman's molecular recycling technology. This process breaks down old and unusable apparel into molecular blocks, which are then used to produce new Naia Renew fibers.

  • Analyst QuickTake: The partnership marks the first of several textile recycling partnerships Eastman intends to launch during 2024. Patagonia is also a customer for Eastman’s Naia Renew fiber, having first partnered to launch a limited run of T-shirts in 2022, while H&M was the first major fashion brand to use Naia Renew in its 2020 autumn/winter collection. Naia Renew is made from 60% certified wood fibers and 40% recycled waste plastics.
