H&M Group has launched Syre, a venture backed by Vargas Holding and TPG Rise Climate, to scale up textile-to-textile polyester recycling. H&M claims the move is in line with its ambitions to use 50% recycled or more sustainably sourced materials by 2030, with 30% recycled materials expected by 2025.
Syre will supply H&M with recycled polyester over a seven-year period as per an offtake agreement valued at USD 600 million. Construction of Syre’s first production plant is underway in North Carolina and is due to begin operations in 2024, with plans for global expansion in Asia and Europe within the next decade.
Analyst QuickTake: H&M’s move to launch Syre comes in the wake of Renewcell’s bankruptcy, a company in which H&M had also invested. The company’s target to incorporate recycled polyester is more ambitious than its competitor, Inditex, which is aiming for 25% recycled content by 2030 and is sourcing its recycled polyester from Ambercycle .
