Opalia (formerly BetterMilk), a Canadian cell-based milk company, has secured a CAD 2 million (~USD 1.5 million) investment led by Hoogwegt Group, with participation from Ahimsa Foundation, Box One Ventures, Cycle Momentum, Kale United, and the Québec Government's Impulsion PME program.
The new funds will be used to accelerate the development of Opalia's debut product and establish a viable commercial strategy. The company also received additional funding through Natural Products Canada's Proof of Concept program.
Analyst QuickTake: Opalia develops cell-based milk using bovine mammary epithelial cells as a sustainable alternative to traditional dairy production methods. Cell-based milk is a relatively nascent industry compared to plant-based milk, with only a few active players like TurtleTree , Biomilq , and Wilk , which produce human and animal milk alternatives using cell culture technology.
