Robinhood, an online trading platform, has launched its commission-free trading platform in the UK. The platform allows users to trade US stocks (but not stocks of companies listed elsewhere) without commission or FX fees and offers 5% interest on uninvested cash.
Due to pending discussions with regulators, Robinhood has halted its plan to offer margin trading with 12% interest in the UK. The company had initially stated that it could offer margin investing without assessing customers' suitability due to a regulatory exemption. However, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has not commented on this exemption.
Analyst QuickTake: Today’s launch of Robinhood’s UK arm follows after the company scrapped previous plans for a UK launch in 2020 before announcing a second attempt in November 2023. Robinhood reported 24% YoY growth in net revenue last month, and also announced plans to expand globally, building on its progress in the UK and EU, with plans to explore further opportunities to expand its customer base outside the US.
