Microsoft and OpenAI plan USD 100 billion AI supercomputer project

Partnerships

  • Microsoft and OpenAI plan to collaborate on a data center project, potentially costing up to USD 100 billion, with plans for an AI supercomputer named "Stargate" to debut in 2028.

  • The project aims to create a supercomputer 100x more expensive than existing data centers. The companies plan to roll out several supercomputers over six years, with Stargate being the fifth phase. A smaller supercomputer is anticipated by 2026.

  • The project's cost is attributed to acquiring AI chips, with some priced as high as USD 30,000 to USD 40,000. The total expenses could surpass USD 115 billion, significantly exceeding Microsoft's previous capital spending.

  • Although Microsoft did not directly confirm the Stargate launch, it expressed a commitment to advancing AI capabilities.
