Google announces AR geospatial content on Google Maps at I/O 2024 conference

Product updates

  • At its I/O 2024 conference, Google announced that it would offer geospatial AR content on Google Maps for mobile applications. The feature will initially be rolled out as part of a pilot program in Singapore and Paris.

  • Specifically, Google Maps will provide AR content when users search for specific locations. If they are proximate to those locations and the locations have AR content, users can tap on “AR Experience” and lift their phones. It will also allow users to explore a place remotely in Street View and share the AR experience through a deep link URL or QR code on social media platforms.

  • Analyst QuickTake: The features will offer a greater level of immersion on Google Maps, an improvement over the 360° view Google Street View offers. Additionally, Google announced a potential AR glass prototype at the conference, where users can ask questions about their environment and receive answers through an LLM.
