UK watchdog decides to halt Microsoft and Mistral AI partnership investigation

  • UK regulators have decided not to investigate the partnership between Microsoft and Mistral AI, an open-source developer of foundation models.

  • The Competition and Markets Authority concluded that the partnership's structure doesn't bestow excessive rights or influence on Microsoft and required no investigation under the UK's merger rules. 

  • Analyst QuickTake: Previously, EU antitrust regulators also investigated Microsoft's USD 13 billion investment in OpenAI and concluded that it is not an acquisition and does not require a formal investigation. However, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in Britain also announced that it would investigate recent AI acquisitions by Microsoft and Amazon , just last month.
