Rocket Lab, a space travel and launch company, has launched the first of NASA's two Earth science cubesats on its Electron rocket as a part of PREFIRE, NASA's Polar Radiant Energy in the Far-InfraRed Experiment mission.
The PREFIRE cubesat is designed to operate in sun-synchronous orbits. Along with another identical cubesat, it includes a thermal infrared spectrometer and can measure infrared emissions at Earth's poles. This aims to fill data gaps and improve climate models with insights on sea ice loss, ice sheet melting, and sea-level rise.
