SpaceX, a space travel and launch company, has launched an EUR 800 million (USD 870 million)-worth EarthCARE (Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer) Earth science mission for the European Space Agency (ESA) and Japan to study clouds and aerosols in the atmosphere.
EarthCARE is equipped with four instruments designed to collect data on clouds and aerosols in the atmosphere, capture imagery and measurements of reflected sunlight, and measure radiated heat. This spacecraft can also observe all elements at the same location simultaneously, providing information essential for weather and climate models.
ESA expects to improve the understanding of the Earth's thermal balance and refine climate and weather models for better forecasting and understanding climate change by utilizing the detailed study of clouds and aerosols.
