Former OpenAI researcher Jan Leike joins Anthropic to lead new Superalignment team

Management news

  • Jan Leike, an AI researcher who recently stepped down from his role at OpenAI, has joined Anthropic. With knowledge and experience in AI research, Leike previously co-led the Superalignment team at OpenAI.

  • In his new role at Anthropic, Leike will focus on scalable oversight, weak-to-strong generalization, and automated alignment research.

  • Following his recruitment, Leike will report to Jared Kaplan, Anthropic's chief science officer; researchers working on scalable oversight will now report to Leike.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Leike expressed dissatisfaction with OpenAI's approach to AI safety, which caused a stir in the company and caused him to resign a couple of weeks ago. Meanwhile, OpenAI also announced the formation of a new AI safety team today.
