US regulators to launch antitrust inquiries into Microsoft, OpenAI, and NVIDIA

Regulation/policy

  • The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Justice (DoJ) are set to launch antitrust inquiries into major technology companies, including Microsoft, OpenAI, and NVIDIA, to scrutinize their partnerships and investments in the GenAI space.

  • The FTC will lead the investigation into Microsoft and OpenAI, while the DOJ will focus on NVIDIA. These inquiries will examine the companies' conduct rather than their mergers and acquisitions.

  • Analyst QuickTake: This news comes a few months after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in Britain announced that it will investigate recent AI acquisitions by Microsoft and Amazon, prompted by concerns over the potential disruption of competition in the AI industry. This April, EU antitrust regulators also looked into Microsoft's USD 13 billion investment in OpenAI; however, they concluded that it is not an acquisition and does not require a formal investigation.
