NASA has awarded USD 10 million for seven proposals pertaining to a 15-year project to gather and return samples from Mars as part of its Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission. The companies awarded the individual USD 1.5 million contracts comprise SpaceX, Lockheed Martin, Aerojet Rocketdyne, Blue Origin, Quantum Space, Northrop Grumman, and Whittinghill Aerospace.
NASA requested the proposals in April, following the independent review board's suggestion to reduce costs and the timeline for the MSR program.
The companies are expected to commence work in July 2024 and finish their studies in October 2024.
