Redwire Corporation, a space infrastructure and solutions company, announced that it secured the contract to be a prime integrator for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) satellite with a novel propulsion system for very-low-Earth orbit (VLEO).
Redwire's SabreSat satellite, used for government intelligence, will house the “air-breathing” electric propulsion systems created by DARPA's Otter program. The Otter program funds the propulsion systems to expand satellite operations at altitudes between 90 km and 250 km.
Analyst QuickTake : DARPA Otter contracts were also awarded to the Electric Propulsion Laboratory (EPL) and Phase Four. EPL received the contract in March 2024 worth ~USD 6.7 million to develop Air Breathing Electric (ABEL) engines. Phase Four received a ~USD 14.9 million contract a month later, in April 2024, to house DARPA's “air-breathing” electric propulsion systems for altitudes ranging from 90 km to 450 km.
