Etched raises USD 120 million to improve AI chip 'Sohu'

Funding

  • Etched has raised USD 120 million in a Series A funding round, seeing contributions from former PayPal CEO Peter Thiel and Replit CEO Amjad Masad.

  • The funding will be used to develop Etched's specialized chip, specifically optimized for transformer models widely used by AI companies, designed to power AI models' content generation and response portion (inference).

  • Additionally, Etched has partnered with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to produce the chips. The funding is also expected to cover the expenses associated with sending its designs to TSMC and manufacturing the chips, a process referred to as "taping out" a chip.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Etched is challenging NVIDIA in the AI chip market with its new ASIC, which reportedly offers 20x faster performance than NVIDIA's H100 GPUs. This advanced chip aims to provide more efficient and powerful solutions for AI workloads, positioning Etched as a strong competitor in the AI hardware space.
