NASA announced it had selected SpaceX to develop and dispatch the US Deorbit Vehicle, awarding the latter with a single contract valued at ~USD 843 million.
The US Deorbit Vehicle must bring the International Space Station (ISS) out of orbit in 2030 when its functional life ends. It is expected to direct the ISS safely back through the Earth's atmosphere, avoiding any risk to populated regions, before its planned crash into the Pacific Ocean.
