OroraTech, a Germany-based provider of satellite-based wildfire detection and thermal intelligence, has been awarded a EUR 20 million (USD 21.5 million) contract by Greece's Ministry of Digital Governance to develop a national satellite-based wildfire early warning system.
The wildfire defense system will consist of four OroraTech thermal satellites and a network of ground sensors and processing services. OroraTech will collaborate with the European Space Agency (ESA), Greek universities such as the National Technical University of Athens and the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, and local companies such as Satways and Attisat to develop and deploy the system across Greece.
However, Greece's National Wildfire System will not be fully operational until OroraTech has its full constellation of 100 shoebox-sized satellites in orbit, scheduled for 2026.
