Surreal Interactive has announced Surreal Touch, a motion controller that will provide input for Apple's Vision Pro headset. Surreal Touch will leverage Vision Pro's ability to play PC VR games, and its price will be revealed at launch, which is expected next month.
Similar to Meta's Touch Pro controllers, Surreal Touch features optical sensors with fisheye lenses for tracking independently from the headset, a ring-less design, onboard SLAM tracking for 6DOF input, and a standard button configuration. Surreal Touch will ship with a SteamVR compatibility mode, supporting existing PC VR games, and a Vision Pro-native streaming app for SteamVR games at "4K, 120 Hz."
Surreal Interactive claims Surreal Touch will allow Vision Pro app developers to support the controllers through a native SDK. The company collaborates with studios to port games to the Vision Pro platform and plans to partner with more developers. A "Tool Mode" for basic UI selection is also being developed.
Analyst QuickTake: Apple’s app ecosystem for the Vision Pro has recently grown rapidly, doubling to over 2,000 in June 2024 relative to February 2024. Additionally, the Vision Pro added its first major VR game title (Demeo), a turn-based tabletop strategy game with RPG elements. However, the compatibility of the Surreal Touch with the Vision Pro is highly dependent on developer uptake on creating games with controller support, as opposed to those with eye-tracking support only.
